This project focuses on the refurbishment and modernization of key railway line sections linking Malaba to Jinja and Port Bell through Kampala and Kyengera. The work is part of a national effort supported by the NIA Project Unit to strengthen transportation infrastructure, improve regional connectivity, and enhance the efficiency of cargo and passenger movement across the country.
The project will upgrade aging railway tracks, bridges, and support systems to improve safety, reliability, and operational capacity. It will also restore critical railway buildings, logistics facilities, and passenger service points needed for smooth rail operations.
Track Refurbishment
Rehabilitation and realignment of selected railway segments to support consistent and safe train movement, including ballast replacement, sleeper installation, and rail strengthening.
Station and Support Buildings
Construction and refurbishment of station buildings, passenger terminals, halts, workshops, and goods sheds to enhance passenger experience and improve freight handling.
Railway Safety and Signaling Systems
Installation of automated level crossing signaling systems to improve traffic safety and reduce accident risks along the rail corridor.
Port and Pier Improvements
Upgrading Port Bell and Jinja Pier structures to improve water-to-rail cargo transfer efficiency, including dredging works to restore navigable depth and enhance docking operations.
Perimeter and Security Enhancements
Fencing and controlled access systems installed along railway sections and stations to improve safety, security, and operational control.
